What It Is
Bulletproof® Brain Octane® Oil is a refined dietary oil consisting of 100% caprylic acid triglycerides (the C8 medium-chain fatty acid) isolated from coconut oil.
Coconut oil naturally contains a mixture of saturated fatty acids of different carbon-chain lengths. The four primary medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are:
- C6 (caproic acid) — small amount, has a distinctive odour
- C8 (caprylic acid) — this product is 100% C8
- C10 (capric acid) — not present in this product
- C12 (lauric acid) — not present in this product
Brain Octane Oil isolates only the C8 fraction through a triple distillation process using only water, heat and pressure — no chemical solvents (no hexane), no additives.
About Medium-Chain Triglycerides
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a category of saturated fatty acid distinguished by their carbon-chain length. Long-chain triglycerides (LCTs, the most common dietary fats) have 13+ carbon atoms; medium-chain triglycerides have 6–12 carbons; short-chain triglycerides have fewer than 6.
The medium-chain length affects how the fatty acid is processed by the digestive system. MCTs are commonly used in ketogenic and low-carb dietary patterns, as well as in clinical nutrition formulations.

The two products are produced by the same brand using similar refining processes — the difference is purely in the carbon-chain composition. Brain Octane® isolates the C8 fraction exclusively; the regular MCT Oil includes both C8 and C10. Brain Octane® commands a higher price point because C8 is the less abundant of the two medium-chain fractions in coconut oil, making it more processing-intensive to isolate.
Why 100% Coconut Sourcing?
Many commercial MCT oils on the market are sourced from palm kernel oil rather than coconut oil. Palm kernel oil also contains C8 and C10 medium-chain triglycerides, but the palm industry is associated with significant environmental and ethical concerns — deforestation, habitat loss, and labour-rights issues in major production regions.

Directions for Use
Start with 1 teaspoon (5mL) daily and gradually increase to 1 tablespoon (15mL) per serve as your digestive system adjusts.
Suggested uses: Blend into hot or cold beverages (coffee, smoothies, shakes), drizzle over salads, mix into salad dressings, or add to soups and other recipes. Pairs naturally with the Bulletproof® Coffee recipe.
Cooking: Suitable for cooking up to 160°C (320°F). Do not use for high-heat frying.
Important: Use to add to or partially replace other oils in meals and drinks — not as a complete replacement. Consuming large amounts on an empty stomach may cause digestive discomfort (loose stools, stomach upset). Build up gradually.
Good to Know
Does it taste like coconut?
No. The refining process removes the coconut flavour and aroma. Brain Octane® Oil is flavourless and odourless, so it blends into beverages and recipes without altering the taste.
Is it the same as coconut oil?
No. Coconut oil is approximately 50% lauric acid (C12), 6–7% capric acid (C10), 7–8% caprylic acid (C8), with the remainder being other saturated and unsaturated fats. Brain Octane® Oil isolates only the C8 fraction, removing the lauric acid and other components entirely.
Why does the bottle say to start with a small amount?
MCTs are processed by the digestive system more rapidly than long-chain fats. Consuming a large amount before the digestive system has adjusted — particularly on an empty stomach — can cause temporary digestive discomfort (loose stools, mild stomach upset). Building up gradually over 1–2 weeks allows the system to adapt.
Can I cook with it?
Yes, but only at low to moderate temperatures (up to 160°C / 320°F). Above this temperature the oil begins to break down. For high-heat cooking, use a different oil (avocado oil, ghee, or coconut oil are common alternatives).
Does it go solid in cold weather?
No. Unlike coconut oil (which solidifies at temperatures below about 24°C), Brain Octane® Oil remains liquid at room temperature and even in cool conditions. This is because the lauric acid — the component of coconut oil with the highest melting point — has been removed.
How is this different from Bulletproof MCT Oil?
Bulletproof MCT Oil contains a blend of C8 (caprylic acid) and C10 (capric acid) at approximately 60/40 ratio. Brain Octane® Oil is 100% C8 with no C10.
