What It Is
This is the smaller (414mL) size of Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil — the same product as the 946mL bottle, in a size that suits new users or those who want to trial MCT oil without committing to a larger bottle. It’s a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil containing only C8 (caprylic acid).
Coconut oil naturally contains a mix of medium-chain fatty acids — C8 (~8%), C10 (~7%), C12 lauric acid (~48%), and other longer-chain fats. Bulletproof isolates the C8 fraction through fractional distillation, giving a product that is 100% C8 caprylic acid triglyceride. It has no colour, no odour, and no taste.
No added vitamins, no fillers, no preservatives. If you use MCT oil daily and already know you like it, the larger 946mL bottle works out cheaper per mL.

Source: Coconut oil, from responsibly harvested coconuts.
Processing: The C8 caprylic acid fraction is separated from the rest of the coconut oil through fractional distillation (heat + pressure differentials, no chemical solvents).
What’s left out: Lauric acid (C12), C10 caprate, longer-chain saturated fats, and non-triglyceride components. This is not coconut oil — it’s the C8 fraction of coconut oil.

How to Use
Because it has no flavour or colour, Brain Octane blends easily into a wide range of foods and drinks:
- In coffee — as the MCT oil component of the Bulletproof Coffee recipe
- In smoothies — add 1 tablespoon per serve; blends without altering flavour
- In salad dressings — substitutes for other oils; whisks well with vinegar and mustard
- Drizzled on food — over steamed vegetables, soups, or fatty meats after cooking
- Cold uses — suitable for cold or lukewarm dishes; not recommended for high-heat frying
Start small. If you’re new to MCT oil, begin with 1 teaspoon (5mL) per day and increase gradually over a week or two. Taking too much too quickly is a common cause of digestive discomfort — MCTs are absorbed differently from other fats, and the gut may need time to adapt. This is one of the reasons the 414mL size is a good starting point — you can test tolerance before committing to a larger bottle.
The Bulletproof Coffee Recipe
"Bulletproof Coffee" is the preparation method for which Brain Octane was originally created. It combines brewed coffee with grass-fed butter (or ghee) and MCT oil, blended to a creamy consistency.
Bulletproof Coffee Preparation
- Brew 2 cups of Bulletproof coffee using the method of your choice
- Combine with 2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter (or grass-fed ghee for a dairy-free option)
- Add 2 tablespoons of Brain Octane Oil (this product)
- Blend in a high-speed blender (or use an Aerolatte® frother) until a creamy head of foam forms
- Pour and drink while hot
Good to Know
Should I buy the 414mL or the 946mL?
The 414mL size (this product) is best if you’re new to MCT oil, want to see how you tolerate it, or use it occasionally. The 946mL bottle is better value per mL if you use it every day and know you like it. The 90mL travel bottle is for travel or single-serve portioning.
How is this different from coconut oil?
Coconut oil is roughly 62% medium-chain triglycerides mixed with longer-chain fats; only about 8% of it is C8 caprylic acid. Brain Octane isolates the C8 fraction only. It’s liquid at room temperature and flavourless, whereas coconut oil is solid below ~24°C and tastes distinctly of coconut.
Why does it get cloudy in the fridge?
MCT oil can thicken or cloud when cold. This is normal. Once returned to room temperature the oil clears and thins again. This does not affect the quality or shelf life.
Can I cook with it?
Best used at low-to-moderate heat or at room temperature. The smoke point is lower than long-chain cooking oils, so it’s not the best choice for high-heat frying or searing. Well suited to salad dressings, drizzling on finished dishes, blending into drinks, or adding to warm (not boiling) soups.
