What This Product Is
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a class of complex sugar molecules naturally found in human breast milk. After lactose and fats, they are the third most abundant component of human milk by volume.
Over 200 different HMO types have been identified by researchers. 2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) is the most abundant single HMO, accounting for approximately 30% of all HMOs by volume in human milk. It is a fucosylated, neutral trisaccharide composed of L-fucose, D-galactose, and D-glucose.
PureHMO® Prebiotic Powder contains a single HMO — 2′-FL — manufactured through precision fermentation from dairy lactose. The 2′-FL produced this way is chemically identical (bio-identical) to 2′-FL naturally present in human milk, while containing no actual human milk in the product.
Regulatory status: 2′-FL is one of six HMOs approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) for use as a food ingredient in Australia and New Zealand.

How Prebiotics Work
A prebiotic is a food substance that the human body does not digest itself. Instead, prebiotics pass through the stomach and small intestine unchanged and become available as food for the bacteria that live in the gut. Different bacteria preferentially consume different prebiotic substrates.
HMOs like 2′-FL are not digested by the human body because humans lack the enzymes needed to break them down. They are consumed by certain bacterial species that do have the enzymes to metabolise them — in particular, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis.
HMO vs Other Prebiotic Fibres
HMOs differ structurally from common prebiotic fibres such as GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides), FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides), and XOS (xylo-oligosaccharides). The key structural differences are:
- Monosaccharide composition — HMOs contain different sugar units (including fucose and sialic acid) that GOS, FOS, and XOS lack
- Linkage type — the chemical bonds between sugar units differ between HMOs and other prebiotic fibres
Some users find HMO prebiotics easier to tolerate than GOS, FOS, or inulin, which can produce gas, bloating, or other digestive sensations in some individuals.

Directions for Use
Mix 1 scoop (1,950mg) into water, juice, coffee, tea, or smoothies. The powder is heat-stable so can be added to hot or cold beverages. Can also be sprinkled onto food.
Start with a smaller amount (half a scoop) for the first few days to assess individual tolerance, then build to the full daily scoop.
