What This Product Is

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a class of complex sugar molecules naturally found in human breast milk. After lactose and fats, they are the third most abundant component of human milk by volume.

Over 200 different HMO types have been identified by researchers. 2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) is the most abundant single HMO, accounting for approximately 30% of all HMOs by volume in human milk. It is a fucosylated, neutral trisaccharide composed of L-fucose, D-galactose, and D-glucose.

PureHMO® Prebiotic Powder contains a single HMO — 2′-FL — manufactured through precision fermentation from dairy lactose. The 2′-FL produced this way is chemically identical (bio-identical) to 2′-FL naturally present in human milk, while containing no actual human milk in the product.

Regulatory status: 2′-FL is one of six HMOs approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) for use as a food ingredient in Australia and New Zealand.

What’s in Each Serve

Ingredient Amount
2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) 1,950mg per scoop

Single-ingredient formulation. No flavouring, no sweeteners, no fillers, no preservatives.

How Prebiotics Work

A prebiotic is a food substance that the human body does not digest itself. Instead, prebiotics pass through the stomach and small intestine unchanged and become available as food for the bacteria that live in the gut. Different bacteria preferentially consume different prebiotic substrates.

HMOs like 2′-FL are not digested by the human body because humans lack the enzymes needed to break them down. They are consumed by certain bacterial species that do have the enzymes to metabolise them — in particular, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis.

HMO vs Other Prebiotic Fibres

HMOs differ structurally from common prebiotic fibres such as GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides), FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides), and XOS (xylo-oligosaccharides). The key structural differences are:

  • Monosaccharide composition — HMOs contain different sugar units (including fucose and sialic acid) that GOS, FOS, and XOS lack
  • Linkage type — the chemical bonds between sugar units differ between HMOs and other prebiotic fibres

Some users find HMO prebiotics easier to tolerate than GOS, FOS, or inulin, which can produce gas, bloating, or other digestive sensations in some individuals.

Good to Know

Does this product contain actual human milk?

No. The 2′-FL in this product is produced through fermentation from dairy lactose. It is chemically identical to the 2′-FL naturally found in human milk, but no human milk is used in production. The brand name "PureHMO® Human Milk Oligosaccharide" refers to the chemical category of the ingredient (HMO), not the source.

Is this product suitable for infants or children?

No. This product is formulated as an adult dietary supplement. It is not intended for use in infants, toddlers, or children. While 2′-FL and several other HMOs are approved by FSANZ for use as food ingredients in Australia — including in infant formula products — the formulation, dose, and presentation of infant-formula HMOs are different and regulated separately. Do not give this product to infants or children.

Is this product vegan?

No — the 2′-FL is produced through fermentation from dairy lactose, so the source is dairy-derived. The fermentation process means the final product contains no intact dairy proteins or significant amounts of lactose, but it is not classified as vegan.

Can I add this to coffee or tea?

Yes. 2′-FL is heat-stable and can be added to hot beverages without degradation. The powder has no flavour and dissolves clearly.

Does this product interact with any medications?

2′-Fucosyllactose is a naturally-occurring food component with no known significant medication interactions. However, if you take prescription medication, particularly for digestive conditions or are immunocompromised, consult a healthcare practitioner before use.

Is this product suitable during pregnancy?

As a Formulated Supplementary Sports Food, this product is not suitable for pregnant women, women planning pregnancy, or women breastfeeding without medical or dietetic supervision. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use.

incredible

i believe it's helped me a lot with food sensitivities while re-integrating a lot of foods after a strict restrictive SIBO diet. After finding out i wasn't breastfed as a child, i feel this could be playing an important part in rebuilding my gut health and building a strong gut. (i've also obviously had alot of progress with the protocol but i will be re buying this to continue the progress). so far have been able to incorporate a lot of new foods without reaction.

It’s all in the gut...

Bifidobacterium is one of the most important gut bacterias and HMO is one of it’s favourite foods. This is a quality product that is so easy to incorporate into your day, and is not heat sensitive, so you can add it to hot drinks.

Hi, I asked a question before but I would like a more specific answer please. How many grams of lactose is in each standard serve of this product?
I look forward to your response to see if this product is suitable for myself

OptimOZ.com.au

We have escalated your question to the Layer Origin team, here's what they mentioned, "While our HMO products are derived from lactose, after the full fermentation and purification process, the end result is only about 1% lactose. Our original PureHMO® Human Milk Oligosaccharide Super Prebiotic Powder has a standard serving size of 1950 mg per scoop. Since the powder is approximately 1% lactose, each 1950 mg scoop contains about 19.5 mg of lactose."

Hi there, I’ve been recommended this by a gut specialist but I’m lactose intolerant, will this be an issue? I don’t eat or drink dairy at all but an odd time I’d have ice cream in a dessert . Hoping this product will be ok??

OptimOZ.com.au

HMO powder contains only trace amount of lactose and is suitable for those with lactose intolerance. The lactose is sourced from cow's milk.
Because the PureHMO® products are derived from lactose, they are not technically dairy-free. People with milk allergies should still only proceed with a physician’s approval.

How much lactose is in this product? I am lactose intolerant but can tolerate it in small amounts. For example i can tolerate butter on toast or a table spoon of milk in coffee

OptimOZ.com.au

HMO powder contains only trace amount of lactose and is suitable for those with lactose intolerance. Research has shown that many people with lactose intolerance can tolerate up to 12 grams of lactose in one sitting, approximately the amount in one cup (230 ml) of milk. Layer Origin Nutrition recommends a serving size of 2.0 grams to start. Therefore, even people with lactose intolerance should be well below the limit of what they can tolerate if they follow the recommended dosage.

The lactose is sourced from cow's milk. Because the PureHMO® products are derived from lactose, they are not technically dairy-free. People with milk allergies should still only proceed with a physician’s approval.

Is PureHMP Prebiotic lactose free?

OptimOZ.com.au

The Layer Origin PureHMO Human Milk Oligosaccharide Super Prebiotic Powder is derived from Lactose. It supports the growth or probiotics and a healthy gut. Also supports a healthy immune system. We recommend you to only take HMO only with your doctors’ approval if you are allergic to cows’ milk.

Given this is dairy derived, is it 1) derived from grass fed/finished animals 2) how do people with potential dairy intolerances respond to this. Thank you

OptimOZ.com.au

1- It's derived from Lactose.
2- If someone is allergic to milk proteins, it's not recommended for them to take HMOs.
