Key Points
- Single-origin coffee — sourced from high-altitude estates in Guatemala (June–December roasting) and Colombia (December–June roasting)
- Hand-picked beans — only ripe berries selected by skilled harvesters
- Medium roast — tasting notes of cinnamon, plum, orange, with a cocoa-hazelnut finish
- Rainforest Alliance Certified beans from estate farms
- Sustainable processing — washed and mechanically dried via established techniques
- Whole bean format — grind fresh at home for optimal flavour and full control over grind size
What It Is
This is the Original Bulletproof Coffee in whole bean format. It is just coffee — Arabica beans, sourced from single-origin estates, hand-picked, sustainably processed, and roasted to a medium roast.
No added vitamins, no added mushroom extracts, no added Coffeeberry® or other ingredients. The bag contains coffee beans.
If you don’t have a grinder or prefer ready-to-brew convenience, the same coffee is also available in pre-ground format. For Nespresso users, it is also available as Nespresso-compatible pods.
Sourcing
Where the beans come from: Bulletproof sources beans from estate farms in Guatemala and Colombia on a six-month rotation — beans roasted between June and December come from a Guatemalan estate; beans roasted between December and June come from a Colombian estate. This pattern applies across all Bulletproof coffee roasts.
How the beans are picked: Hand-picked by experienced coffee harvesters who select only perfectly ripe berries. This contrasts with mass-harvest approaches that may include unripe or damaged beans.
How the beans are processed: Beans are sustainably washed and mechanically dried before roasting.

Brewing Notes
Whole beans give you full control over grind size, letting you dial in the ideal grind for your brewing method:
- Espresso — fine grind, per your machine’s recommendations
- Moka pot / AeroPress — fine-to-medium grind
- Drip / pour-over / syphon — medium grind
- French press — coarse grind, 4-minute steep
- Cold brew — coarse grind, 12–24 hour steep
Grind just before brewing for the freshest flavour. Whole beans preserve volatile aromatic compounds inside the bean until you grind — the moment beans are ground, they begin losing freshness rapidly. Grinding to order is one of the biggest single upgrades to home coffee quality.
The Bulletproof Coffee Recipe
"Bulletproof Coffee" is a popular preparation method that combines brewed coffee with grass-fed butter (or ghee) and MCT oil. It originated as a high-fat breakfast option for people on ketogenic or low-carb dietary patterns who want to skip a traditional carbohydrate-based breakfast.
Bulletproof Coffee Preparation
- Grind 2 cups worth of beans (medium grind for drip, fine for espresso)
- Brew 2 cups of coffee using the method of your choice
- Combine with 2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter (or grass-fed ghee for a dairy-free option)
- Add 2 tablespoons of MCT oil (such as Primal Warrior C8 MCT Oil or Bulletproof Brain Octane)
- Blend in a high-speed blender (or use an Aerolatte® frother) until a creamy head of foam forms
- Pour and drink while hot
The fats give the drink a creamy texture and a higher caloric content than plain coffee. Treat it as a meal rather than a beverage if using it as a breakfast replacement.
Packaging Notes
Whole beans stay fresher for longer than pre-ground coffee because the intact bean protects volatile aromatic compounds from oxidation. To extend freshness further, this product is packaged in a nitrogen-flushed bag with a one-way degassing valve — the nitrogen displaces oxygen at packaging, and the valve lets CO&sub2; from the beans escape without letting oxygen in. Bags stay fresh at room temperature for several weeks once received. For longer storage, unopened bags can be frozen (place tape over the degassing valve first to prevent moisture infiltration).
Good to Know
Is this the same coffee as Bulletproof’s other roasts?
The bean sourcing and processing approach is the same across the Original Bulletproof Coffee line (whole bean, ground, and pods). The differences are in the format (whole bean vs ground vs pods). Bulletproof also sells fortified coffees (such as The High Achiever and The Maximizer) which contain added ingredients — those are different products from this Original line.
Why whole bean vs ground?
Whole beans stay fresher longer because the bean keeps the volatile aromatics inside until you grind. Pre-ground coffee is more convenient — no grinder needed, less noise in the morning. The trade-off is freshness vs convenience. If you have a grinder and want the absolute freshest cup, get whole beans (this product). If you don’t and want to start brewing straight away, ground works.
How much caffeine is in a cup?
Coffee caffeine varies with brewing method and water-to-coffee ratio. A typical cup of brewed drip coffee (240mL) made from this coffee contains roughly 80–120mg of caffeine. Australian dietary guidelines recommend adults limit caffeine intake to no more than 400mg per day from all sources combined.
Do I have to make Bulletproof Coffee with it?
No. These are regular coffee beans. Make coffee however you normally do. The Bulletproof Coffee recipe (with butter and MCT oil) is one popular preparation method but not the only way to use it — it works just as well for regular drip coffee, French press, espresso, or however you usually brew.
