What It Is

This is The Mentalist in pre-ground format — Bulletproof®'s medium-dark roast option. It uses the same estate-sourced Arabica beans as the Original Bulletproof Coffee, taken to a longer roast for a fuller body and darker flavour profile. No added ingredients — just coffee.

The medium-dark roast sits between the Original (medium) and French Kick (dark) — if you prefer a bolder coffee than the Original but not as intense as the darker French Kick, The Mentalist is the middle option.

If you prefer to grind your own beans, the same coffee is also available in whole bean format.

Sourcing

Where the beans come from: Bulletproof sources beans from estate farms in Guatemala and Colombia on a six-month rotation — beans roasted between June and December come from a Guatemalan estate; beans roasted between December and June come from a Colombian estate.

How the beans are picked: Hand-picked by experienced coffee harvesters who select only perfectly ripe berries.

How the beans are processed: Beans are sustainably washed and mechanically dried before being roasted to a medium-dark profile.

Brewing Notes

The medium grind in this product is set up for:

Drip coffee makers — ideal grind
Syphon brewing — ideal grind
Pour over — works well
Moka pots — works well (the medium-dark roast suits moka pot brewing especially)

For AeroPress, French press, cold brew, or Turkish coffee, the medium grind isn’t ideal — you’ll need to increase the brew time (typically 3+ minutes) to compensate. If you regularly use these methods, the whole-bean version may suit you better. For espresso, the whole-bean version is strongly recommended — the medium-dark roast is excellent for espresso but requires a fine grind not available in this pre-ground product.

The Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

"Bulletproof Coffee" is a popular preparation method that combines brewed coffee with grass-fed butter (or ghee) and MCT oil.

Bulletproof Coffee Preparation

Brew 2 cups of coffee using the method of your choice
Combine with 2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter (or grass-fed ghee for a dairy-free option)
Add 2 tablespoons of MCT oil (such as Primal Warrior C8 MCT Oil or Bulletproof Brain Octane)
Blend in a high-speed blender (or use an Aerolatte® frother) until a creamy head of foam forms
Pour and drink while hot

The medium-dark roast profile of The Mentalist gives Bulletproof Coffee a fuller, richer body compared with the Original.

Packaging Notes

Pre-ground coffee tends to lose freshness faster than whole beans because the increased surface area accelerates oxidation. To extend freshness, this product is packaged in a nitrogen-flushed bag with a one-way degassing valve — the nitrogen displaces oxygen at packaging, and the valve lets CO₂ from the beans escape without letting oxygen in. Bags stay fresh at room temperature for several weeks once received. For longer storage, unopened bags can be frozen (place tape over the degassing valve first to prevent moisture infiltration).

How is this different from the Original Bulletproof Coffee?

Same estate-sourced beans and processing, but roasted longer to reach a medium-dark profile. The result is a fuller-bodied cup with darker flavour notes (cherry, almond, caramel) instead of the Original’s brighter fruit-and-spice profile (cinnamon, plum, orange).

Which roast should I pick?

If you like a smooth, balanced cup with brighter notes, go with the Original (medium roast). If you like a fuller-bodied cup that carries through milk-based drinks, The Mentalist (this product) is a good pick. If you want something darker and more intense, try French Kick (dark roast). If you want to try all three, the 3-Roast Variety Pack has one bag of each.

How much caffeine is in a cup?

Coffee caffeine varies with brewing method and water-to-coffee ratio. A typical cup of brewed drip coffee (240mL) made from this coffee contains roughly 80–120mg of caffeine. Australian dietary guidelines recommend adults limit caffeine intake to no more than 400mg per day from all sources combined.

Do I have to make Bulletproof Coffee with it?

No. This is regular ground coffee. Make it however you normally make coffee. The Bulletproof Coffee recipe (with butter and MCT oil) is one popular option but not the only way to use it.

Best coffee ever!!

I always start my day with the Bullet Proof coffee, it’s the best. My fav is the original but time to time will mix it up with the Mentalist.

Smooth, rich and satisfying

Sorry - that title might sound like a 70s commercial for cigarettes, which sort of gives my age away! Anyway, after several years of drinking mainly espresso, I'm now enjoying a plunger/cafetiere-style brew, secure in the knowledge that it's mould-free and sustainably sourced. And whizzing it up with a shot of Bulletproof MCT Oil takes coffee-drinking to a whole new level.

Reliable quality, great taste

I've been using The Mentalist dark roast, both beans and ground, for at least 7 years now. It's part of my morning routine and I really enjoy the taste, quality and consistency. I've never had a bad batch, or bag, and it lasts me exactly 2 weeks so I can ensure I buy in advance of running out (as long as Optimoz has stock!)

My favourite Mycotoxin free plunger coffee

Came back to Optimoz and Bulletproof coffee after some time. This blend, "The Mentalist" is just the right depth and richness. The grind is super for French press. Price is reasonable.

Really well rounded coffee

I like the organic mycotoxin free coffee and this flavour is a great all-rounder. Sometime mix with a scoop of French Kick for more punch :-)

Smooth and steady

TLDR: this coffee has a smooth flavour, doesn’t leave me with the jitters or irritate my bladder.
I’m one of these people whose brain doesn’t really switch on with a coffee but I never got around the bitter taste and always would get the jitters. I actually didn’t notice until switching to bulletproof coffee that other coffees were probably irritating my bladder or something, because those times that I forget to reorder before I run out and use the other coffees in the house I definitely notice now how much they have me needing to relieve myself often. And this coffee doesn’t leave me with the jitters like other coffee does.

Smooth but rich flavour

Highly recommend you buy this coffee, a little French press and MCT oil. It's delicious and you won't even want to go out for coffee after trying it. It's smooth and rich in flavour. Not at all bitter.
