About Tributyrin
Tributyrin is a triglyceride: a molecule made of glycerol esterified with three molecules of butyric acid (also known as butanoic acid). It’s a naturally-occurring compound — butyric acid is found in butter (about 3-4% of butterfat) and various fermented foods.
Butyrate (the salt or ester form of butyric acid) is a short-chain fatty acid. In the digestive tract, it’s also naturally produced when colonic bacteria ferment certain dietary fibres.
The triglyceride form (tributyrin) is commonly used in supplement formulas because it’s a more palatable, capsule-friendly delivery format than free butyric acid (which has a distinct odour). The body cleaves the triglyceride bonds in the small intestine, releasing the component butyric acid.

What is tributyrin chemically?
Tributyrin is a triglyceride — a single glycerol molecule with three butyric acid (butanoic acid, C4) molecules attached. Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid naturally present in butter (about 3-4% of butterfat) and many fermented foods.
Why the triglyceride form rather than direct butyrate?
Free butyric acid has a distinct strong odour (it’s the same compound that gives rancid butter its smell). The triglyceride form (tributyrin) doesn’t have the same odour profile, making it more practical for capsule formats. In the small intestine, the body cleaves the triglyceride bonds, releasing the component butyric acid for absorption.
What does the “Complex” in “Tributyrin Complex” mean?
“Tributyrin Complex” typically refers to the tributyrin compound formulated with a carrier (such as a microencapsulation matrix) to improve stability and handling. Refer to the bottle label for the specific formulation details.
What about the PerfectAmino® blend?
The 25 mg PerfectAmino blend is a small inclusion of BodyHealth’s branded essential amino acid formulation. The standalone PerfectAmino product contains the full functional dose (2,500 mg per serve); the inclusion in this Tributyrin product is at a much lower level.
