What This Product Is

Vegzymes is a digestive enzyme supplement — a capsule containing a blend of enzymes that the human body produces naturally, plus several plant-fibre-targeting enzymes that humans don’t produce on their own.

The formulation is built around the digestive challenges of plant-rich diets. Plant cell walls (cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin) and certain plant compounds (phytic acid, raffinose-family oligosaccharides in beans and legumes) are harder for the human digestive system to fully break down because we don’t produce the specific enzymes for them.

The product is taken with meals containing the foods these enzymes act on — especially meals high in fibre, beans, legumes, raw vegetables, or other plant-heavy components.

The 11 Enzymes

Enzyme Acts on
Protease Proteins
Lipase Fats
Amylase Starches
Cellulase Cellulose (plant cell walls) — humans don’t produce this enzyme naturally
Hemicellulase Hemicellulose (a component of plant cell walls)
Pectinase Pectin (a soluble fibre in fruits)
Phytase Phytic acid (a compound in grains, seeds, and legumes)
Alpha-galactosidase Raffinose-family oligosaccharides found in beans and legumes (the compounds associated with bean-related digestive discomfort)
Astrazyme™ A proprietary multi-enzyme complex (additional protease, amylase, cellulase, lipase, and lactase activity)
InnoSlim® A branded extract blend (Panax notoginseng + Astragalus membranaceus)
Betaine HCl Trimethylglycine with hydrochloric acid — an acid-supportive compound

Refer to the bottle label for exact enzyme activity units per capsule and the complete ingredient list.

Who It’s Designed For

Vegzymes is formulated around the digestive challenges of plant-rich diets. It’s designed for:

  • Vegans and vegetarians — whose diets are typically high in fibre, legumes, and raw vegetables
  • Raw food diet eaters — where cellulose-rich plant cell walls aren’t broken down by cooking
  • Paleo and Keto eaters who include large amounts of plant foods — the diets aren’t exclusively meat, and the vegetable component carries the same digestion considerations
  • Anyone who regularly eats salads, raw vegetables, beans, legumes, or high-fibre meals

If your diet is mostly cooked meat and dairy with minimal plant content, this product is less relevant — you’d be paying for enzymes targeting compounds that aren’t in much of your food. BiOptimizers’ sister product MassZymes is the broader-spectrum option without the plant-specific focus.

Good to Know

Why take enzymes with food?

Digestive enzymes work on the food in your stomach and upper small intestine. Taken without food, they have nothing to act on. The timing of intake (with meals) is what makes the difference.

Do I take this every meal or only some meals?

The formula is built around the digestive challenges of plant-rich meals (high fibre, legumes, beans, raw vegetables). Taking it with those specific meals matches the formulation. For a meal that’s mostly cooked meat with no significant plant component, the formulation isn’t targeting what’s on your plate.

What’s the difference between Vegzymes and MassZymes?

Both are BiOptimizers digestive enzyme products. Vegzymes is specifically built around plant-fibre and plant-compound digestion (cellulase, hemicellulase, pectinase, phytase, alpha-galactosidase). MassZymes is the broader-spectrum option with a different emphasis. If your diet leans plant-heavy, Vegzymes matches the formulation. If you eat a mixed diet without strong plant emphasis, MassZymes may be more relevant.

Is it vegan?

It is vegetarian (vegetable-derived enzymes and vegetable cellulose capsule shell). For strict vegan certification, refer to the bottle label for the specific certification status.

Can I open the capsule and use the powder?

It’s usually recommended to take the capsule intact. The capsule shell helps deliver the enzymes to the appropriate digestive site — emptying contents into a beverage may alter the flavour and isn’t the formulated method.
