What It Is
Brain Octane® C8 MCT Softgels are the encapsulated softgel format of Bulletproof’s flagship Brain Octane Oil — a 100% pure caprylic acid (C8) medium-chain triglyceride sourced from highly-refined coconut oil.
The softgel format makes the same C8 MCT oil portable for use at home, work, the gym or while travelling — without the need to measure or pour liquid oil.
Product Highlights
About C8 MCT Oil
MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride — a type of fat distinguished by the length of its fatty acid chains (typically 6 to 12 carbon atoms long). MCTs occur naturally in coconut oil, palm kernel oil and dairy fat, and they are processed by the body differently from longer-chain fats found in most other dietary oils.
The four main types of MCT are distinguished by the number of carbon atoms in their fatty acid chains:
- C6 — caproic acid
- C8 — caprylic acid
- C10 — capric acid
- C12 — lauric acid
Bulletproof Brain Octane® is 100% C8 (caprylic acid) — the most refined and concentrated of the medium-chain triglycerides used in supplemental products. Many MCT oils on the market are blends of C8 and C10; Brain Octane is exclusively C8.
Ingredients
Caprylic acid triglycerides from highly-refined coconut oil (Brain Octane® Oil), bovine gelatin, glycerin, purified water.
Dietary Note
The softgel capsule shell of this product contains bovine gelatin (animal-derived). This product is therefore not vegan and not vegetarian. The Brain Octane oil itself is plant-derived (from coconut), but the capsule shell contains animal-derived gelatin. Vegan customers may prefer Brain Octane Oil in liquid form, which is plant-based.

Directions for Use
Take 2 softgels as directed on the product label. Take with water.
If new to MCT oil: Start with 1 softgel per day and increase gradually. MCT oil can cause digestive discomfort if introduced too quickly — building up over a few days helps the digestive system adjust.
Refer to the product label for full guidance. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
Good to Know
Softgels vs liquid Brain Octane Oil — which should I choose?
The active C8 MCT oil is identical between the softgel and liquid formats. Choose softgels for travel, gym bags or convenient daily dosing without needing to measure or pour. Choose the liquid Brain Octane Oil if you mix it into coffee, smoothies or food, or if you prefer a vegan option.
What’s the difference between C8 and other MCT oils?
Most MCT oils on the market are blends of C8 (caprylic acid) and C10 (capric acid), with some also containing C12 (lauric acid). Brain Octane is exclusively C8 — the most refined and concentrated medium-chain triglyceride, and the most expensive to produce. Pure C8 products typically cost more than C8/C10 blends per unit volume.
Why is the source coconut, not palm?
Caprylic acid (C8) can be extracted from either coconut oil or palm kernel oil. Bulletproof exclusively uses coconut-sourced C8 due to environmental sustainability concerns associated with some palm oil production.
Should I take it with food?
MCT softgels can be taken with or without food. Some users prefer to take them with a meal to support digestive comfort, while others take them on their own. Consistency at the same time each day is more important than whether food is present.
