Single-Strain Probiotic + Prebiotic Synbiotic · Vegetable Capsules · Shelf Stable
BiOptimizers P3OM (Probiotic Breakthrough*)
A vegetable capsule supplement combining a patented strain of Lactobacillus plantarum OM with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) — a synbiotic formulation pairing a probiotic with a prebiotic fibre. Freeze-dried preparation, shelf-stable (no refrigeration required).
Vegan capsule shell, gluten-free, sugar-free. Probiotic culture grown on milk-containing medium — trace dairy may be present.
*Note that P3OM has been renamed to Probiotic Breakthrough only in the USA.
What It Is
BiOptimizers P3OM is a synbiotic capsule supplement — the combination of a probiotic strain with a prebiotic fibre — supplying:
- Lactobacillus plantarum OM — a patented strain of Lactobacillus plantarum, freeze-dried for shelf stability
- Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) — a plant-derived soluble prebiotic fibre
The capsule shell is vegetable cellulose (plant-derived). The formulation uses stabilised hypoallergenic rice bran as a shelf-life agent. The freeze-drying preparation method is designed to maintain potency without refrigeration.
About Lactobacillus plantarum
Lactobacillus plantarum is a species of bacteria found naturally in many fermented foods, including sauerkraut, kimchi, sourdough, brined olives, pickled vegetables, and some traditional dairy ferments. It is one of the most well-studied probiotic species in scientific literature.
This product uses a specific patented strain designated L. plantarum OM — selected and developed for its specific cultivation characteristics.
As a lactic acid bacterium, L. plantarum ferments carbohydrates and produces lactic acid as a byproduct. This is the same metabolic activity that gives fermented foods their characteristic tangy flavour.
About Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS)
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are short chains of fructose molecules that occur naturally in many plant foods including chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, and bananas.
FOS is classified as a prebiotic — a category of soluble dietary fibre that resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the large intestine intact, where it serves as a fermentable substrate for the natural gut microbiota during their normal metabolic activity. Combining a probiotic with a prebiotic in a single product is referred to as a synbiotic formulation.
About the Freeze-Dried Preparation
Many probiotic supplements require refrigeration to maintain bacterial viability. BiOptimizers Probiotic Breakthrough uses a freeze-drying process that produces a shelf-stable preparation.
The freeze-drying process removes water from the bacterial cells while preserving their structure, placing the bacteria into a dormant state. The bacteria reactivate upon exposure to moisture in the digestive tract. This preparation method does not require refrigeration during storage.

If taking antibiotics: Separate probiotic intake by at least one hour from the medication.
Good to Know
What is a synbiotic?
A synbiotic is a product that combines a probiotic (a live bacterial culture) with a prebiotic (a fermentable fibre that serves as a food source for the probiotic and existing gut bacteria). The combination is intended to deliver both the bacteria and their preferred fermentation substrate in a single formulation.
Why only one bacterial strain?
Some probiotic supplements use multiple strains of bacteria; others use a single strain. The single-strain approach focuses on the documented characteristics of one specific bacterial strain rather than relying on the combined effect of multiple species. This product uses only the patented L. plantarum OM strain.
Why rice bran as an other ingredient?
Stabilised hypoallergenic rice bran is used as a shelf-life extender for the active probiotic culture. Rice bran helps absorb residual moisture that would otherwise activate the freeze-dried bacterial cells prematurely, which would reduce shelf life.
Why doesn’t it require refrigeration?
The freeze-drying process places the bacterial cells into a dormant state, removing the moisture they would otherwise need for metabolic activity. In this dormant state, the bacteria are stable at room temperature for extended periods. Many other probiotic products that aren’t freeze-dried (or use less robust strains) require refrigeration to maintain viability.
Can it be taken with food or on an empty stomach?
Either is fine. The freeze-dried preparation is designed to withstand stomach acid regardless of whether food is present. Many users take it with the first meal of the day for convenience and consistency.
