Key Points

  • Single-origin coffee — from high-altitude estates in Guatemala (June–December roasting) and Colombia (December–June roasting)
  • Hand-picked beans — only ripe berries selected by skilled harvesters
  • Dark roast — smooth, medium-bodied, with smoky chocolate aroma
  • Rainforest Alliance Certified beans from estate farms
  • Sustainable processing — washed and mechanically dried via established techniques
  • Whole bean format — grind fresh at home for optimal flavour and full control over grind size

What It Is

This is French Kick in whole bean format — Bulletproof®'s dark roast option. Same estate-sourced Arabica beans as the Original Bulletproof Coffee, taken to a dark roast profile for a deep, smoky flavour with less of the brightness of lighter roasts. No added ingredients — just coffee.

The dark roast is the boldest of the Bulletproof coffee line — darker than the Mentalist (medium-dark) and considerably darker than the Original (medium). If you like bold, French-style coffee, or want a robust base for espresso and milk drinks, this is the roast to pick.

If you prefer ready-to-brew convenience, the same coffee is also available in pre-ground format.

Sourcing

Where the beans come from: Bulletproof sources beans from estate farms in Guatemala and Colombia on a six-month rotation.

How the beans are picked: Hand-picked by experienced coffee harvesters who select only perfectly ripe berries.

How the beans are processed: Beans are sustainably washed and mechanically dried before being roasted to a dark profile.

Brewing Notes

Whole beans give you full control over grind size. The dark roast performs especially well in:

  • Espresso — fine grind (dark roasts are the traditional choice for espresso)
  • Moka pot / AeroPress — fine-to-medium grind
  • Milk-based drinks (latte, cappuccino) — dark roast cuts through milk cleanly
  • Drip / pour-over / syphon — medium grind, best for those who like a bolder cup
  • French press — coarse grind, 4-minute steep
  • Cold brew — coarse grind, 12–24 hour steep (dark roast makes a rich cold brew)

Grind just before brewing for the freshest flavour.

The Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

"Bulletproof Coffee" is a popular preparation method that combines brewed coffee with grass-fed butter (or ghee) and MCT oil.

Bulletproof Coffee Preparation

  1. Grind 2 cups worth of beans (medium grind for drip, fine for espresso)
  2. Brew 2 cups of coffee using the method of your choice
  3. Combine with 2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter (or grass-fed ghee for a dairy-free option)
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of MCT oil (such as Primal Warrior C8 MCT Oil or Bulletproof Brain Octane)
  5. Blend in a high-speed blender (or use an Aerolatte® frother) until a creamy head of foam forms
  6. Pour and drink while hot

The dark roast profile of French Kick makes for a bolder, more intense Bulletproof Coffee — the coffee character stays in the foreground even with the butter and MCT added.

Packaging Notes

Whole beans stay fresher for longer than pre-ground coffee. This product is packaged in a nitrogen-flushed bag with a one-way degassing valve — the nitrogen displaces oxygen at packaging, and the valve lets CO2 from the beans escape without letting oxygen in. Bags stay fresh at room temperature for several weeks once received. For longer storage, unopened bags can be frozen (place tape over the degassing valve first).

Good to Know

How is this different from the Original Bulletproof Coffee?

Same estate-sourced beans and processing, but roasted much longer to reach a dark profile. The result is a bolder, smokier cup that carries more caramelised flavours from the deeper roast. The Original is medium roast with brighter fruit-and-spice notes; French Kick is dark roast with smoky chocolate aromas.

Which roast should I pick?

If you like a smooth, balanced cup with brighter notes, go with the Original (medium roast). If you like something in the middle, try The Mentalist (medium-dark). French Kick (this product) is the boldest option — best if you like French-style coffee, espresso, or milk drinks. The 3-Roast Variety Pack has one bag of each.

How much caffeine is in a cup?

A typical cup of brewed drip coffee (240mL) contains roughly 80–120mg of caffeine. (A common misconception is that darker roasts have more caffeine — caffeine content actually varies more with brewing method and bean weight than roast level.) Australian dietary guidelines recommend adults limit caffeine intake to no more than 400mg per day.

Do I have to make Bulletproof Coffee with it?

No. These are regular coffee beans. Make coffee however you normally do — espresso, drip, French press, or however you like. The Bulletproof Coffee recipe is one popular option but not the only way to use it.
