About Akkermansia muciniphila
Akkermansia muciniphila is a species of bacteria naturally present in the human gut microbiome. It was first identified by researchers in 2004 and has since become a focus of microbiome research.
The species name refers to its biological feature of metabolising mucin — the protein-rich substance that forms the mucus layer on the inside of the gut wall.
As a commercial probiotic ingredient, Akkermansia muciniphila is a relatively newer category compared to the more established Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera. Different forms (live versus pasteurised) are produced for different supplement applications.

The resistant starch enteric coating is a formulation feature: in standard capsule designs, stomach acid can damage live probiotic bacteria before they reach the small intestine. The resistant starch coating provides physical protection during gastric passage.
Clean-Label Formulation
This product is formulated without common additives used in many supplement capsules:
- No artificial additives
- No magnesium stearate (a common flow agent used to keep capsule-filling machinery running smoothly)
- No silica (silicon dioxide — another common flow/anti-caking agent)

Directions for Use
Start with 1 capsule daily for the first 3–5 days, taken with or without food, to assess individual tolerance. After the initial period, increase to 2 capsules per day if comfortable.

Why are there no flow aids or additives?
Layer Origin’s formulation approach uses only the three active ingredients (Akkermansia, 2′-FL, resistant starch) plus the vegetable cellulose capsule shell. Common capsule-manufacturing additives like magnesium stearate and silica are not used. Some people prefer additive-free formulations as a personal preference.
What does the resistant starch do?
Resistant starch in this product serves two functions: (1) it is itself a prebiotic fibre that the human body doesn’t digest, and (2) it provides a physical coating around the Akkermansia bacterial cells that helps protect them as they pass through the acidic environment of the stomach.
