About SAMe

SAMe — short for S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine — is a compound that occurs naturally in every living cell of the human body. It is produced in the body from the amino acid methionine (an essential amino acid found in dietary protein) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

What is “methylation”?

Methylation is a biochemical process in which a methyl group (a single carbon atom with three attached hydrogen atoms) is transferred from one molecule to another. It happens continuously throughout the body as part of normal cellular metabolism. SAMe is one of the body’s primary methyl-donor compounds.

Why is the product not enteric-coated?

Many SAMe products use enteric-coated tablets to protect SAMe from stomach acid. BodyHealth’s formulation uses the disulfate tosylate form of SAMe in a vegetable cellulose capsule — this form has stability characteristics that allow it to be delivered without enteric coating.

Should I take it on an empty stomach?

The product label allows for use with or without food. Some users prefer to take SAMe on an empty stomach; others prefer with food. Consistency at the same time each day is more important than whether food is present.
