Live Probiotic + HMO + Resistant Starch  ·  Vegetable Capsules

Layer Origin® Akkermansia muciniphila

A capsule supplement combining live Akkermansia muciniphila with two prebiotic ingredients — 2′-Fucosyllactose (HMO) and NON-GMO resistant starch. The resistant starch is used as a protective coating around the bacterial cells; the HMO is included as a fermentation substrate. Free from artificial additives, magnesium stearate and silica. No refrigeration required.

What It Is

Layer Origin® Akkermansia muciniphila is a capsule supplement supplying three components:

  • Akkermansia muciniphila — a bacterial species naturally present in the human intestinal tract
  • 2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) — a Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO) included as a fermentation substrate
  • NON-GMO resistant starch — coated around the bacterial cells to protect them through the digestive process

The formula is vegetable-capsule based and contains no artificial additives or common flow agents (no magnesium stearate, no silica). The product is shelf-stable and does not require refrigeration.

About Akkermansia muciniphila

Akkermansia muciniphila is a bacterial species naturally present in the human intestinal tract. It was first identified and named in 2004 by Dutch researchers and has been one of the more studied bacterial species in microbiome research over the past two decades.

A. muciniphila lives within the mucus layer of the gut wall — the species name muciniphila literally translates to “mucus-loving.” It is one of the more abundant bacterial species in the healthy adult gut microbiome.

As a dietary supplement ingredient, Akkermansia muciniphila is a relatively new addition to the probiotic supplement category. It is distinct from the more commonly-used probiotic species such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.

About 2′-Fucosyllactose (HMO)

2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) is a Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO) — one of more than 200 unique complex sugars naturally found in human breast milk.

2′-FL is the most abundant HMO in human breast milk. It is classified as a non-digestible oligosaccharide, meaning it passes through the upper digestive tract intact and reaches the large intestine, where it functions as a fermentable substrate for the natural gut microbiota.

2′-FL has been approved as a food ingredient in multiple jurisdictions and is increasingly used in infant formula and dietary supplements. Akkermansia muciniphila is one of the bacterial species that can ferment 2′-FL.

About the Resistant Starch Coating

Resistant starch is a category of carbohydrate that resists digestion in the upper digestive tract and reaches the large intestine intact. It is classified as a type of dietary fibre and is naturally found in foods such as cooked-and-cooled potatoes, green bananas, beans, and oats.

In this formula, the resistant starch serves two purposes: (1) it acts as a physical coating around the Akkermansia bacterial cells to protect them from stomach acid during transit, and (2) it functions as a fermentable substrate once it reaches the large intestine.

Good to Know

Can I take this with other Layer Origin HMO products?

Yes — this product can be taken alongside Layer Origin PureHMO® Prebiotic Powder or SuperHMO® products. The additional HMOs serve as fermentation substrates that the Akkermansia and other beneficial gut bacteria can use.

Why no magnesium stearate or silica?

Magnesium stearate and silica are common flow agents used in capsule manufacturing to prevent ingredients sticking to machinery. Layer Origin® chooses to manufacture without these additives. The trade-off is more careful manufacturing process control; the benefit is a cleaner ingredient list.

Why is the resistant starch around the cells, not inside the capsule?

The resistant starch is used as a physical coating around the Akkermansia cells themselves. This coating is designed to protect the bacteria from stomach acid during transit. Once the capsule and the starch coating dissolve in the lower digestive tract, the resistant starch also becomes available as a fermentation substrate.

How is this different from common probiotic supplements?

Most probiotic supplements use bacteria from the Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium genera. Akkermansia muciniphila belongs to a different bacterial family (Akkermansiaceae) and is a relatively newer addition to the probiotic supplement category.
